The corona virus job retention scheme will be closed to new entrants with effect from 30th June 2020. From 1st July 2020 the scheme can only be used for staff who have already been furloughed for a full three weeks. This means that the last date from which an employee can be furloughed is 10th June 2020, so don’t delay.
The closing of the scheme coincides with an adaptation to allow for so called ‘flexible furlough’ whereby workers may to return to work on a part time basis, whilst furloughed. Details of how ‘flexible furlough’ will operate are to be published on 12th June 2020. However the plan seems to be that employers will be required to meet the salary and costs of the workers for hours worked, with the government grant then claimed in proportion.
