Following on from news this week that employees can be furloughed and a grant claimed under the coronavirus job retention scheme (‘CJRS’) scheme during a period of statutory notice, we now have clarification on the position for contractual notice periods.
Guidance has now been updated which confirms that a CJRS grant can also be claimed for a contractual notice period. This clarity is as expected but is welcomed as it is common for employment contracts to include notice periods which exceed the statutory minimum. The use of the furlough scheme during an employee’s notice period should represent a significant cost saving for many business in what are already difficult times for the industry.
